Cable/DSL (question to UK members)

I called them… and… responses were…

“Your dsl modem is 5 years old, time to get a new one… $65 please happy.gif !!!”

They did some line tests… and it seemed fine when i was talking to them… then I hung up, which disconnected me… and then… my problem occurs over again >_<

…that is pretty old man…i never had dsl for more than 2 years…

for me its going on 5 altho thats between 2 providers altho lm off to my third as we speak just awaiting on my phone company to change the realm details and such

QUOTE (unruled;150980)

if its 65$ to get a new modem, then you might aswell end your contract and switch..

here’s the thing though ruled, his options are most likely going to be SBC global or a major pipeline company that in the area. and the pipeline internet is probably going to charge him around 60-85 dollars a month anyways. i’m assuming his SBC is only costing around 20-40 dollars which is why he got it in the first place. best option would be to get a new modem i’d say. he’s not going to be getting 5-10 Mbps but it’s fast enough to face me with China Loli.

Edit.
Oh and if his cable company is Comcast, i’m assuming he just doesn’t want to be Comcastic!

Threaten them that you’re going to switch to their competitor XD

In areas with FiOS people who have Comcast do that and they do some crazy discounts and lots of bending over backwards laugh.gif

Loe, were you once Comcastic?

No, and never will be T_T

The way cable companies operate is disgusting, having hundreds of peers on a node that can barely handle 30 is beyond greed

i was once Comcastic, sigh, bad times and good times.

well finally lm not with AOL anymore, as of today lm with EurISP however AOL did try pulling a fast one saying l couldnt cancel the contract till december because l was still in contract, however after some quick thinking and telling them what their TOC’s said l was let off.

Well,

If i decide to get cable, what is the “usual” procedure?
Would they need to come over and install things outside and inside the house?

I would like to know… so I can decide to clean up a bit or not :heh:

cabletv socket :nani:

So, basically… they’ll come… put something by the main tv in my living room… and maybe my room if my mother and I decide if we want cable in my room too or not…

so… there is no need for another box for my computer’s internet?
so they don’t need my computer on… ?

usually, with people who cave cable here, the router is placed by the computer since almost all houses have a coax socket in each room…if your house isn’t wired up with the necessary wirings the tech should wire it up and put it near the PC, and if you order TV then they should also put one where the TV is…and if you have more then one they should put plugs there too…but anything can happen if you get a bad tech

“Bad Tech…” …

Guess I better get my hmong knife ready for the day he comes >_>
My mother and I has called the cable company to switch our phone + tv + internet services to that cable company “Time Warner Cable” which does Road Runner for those who lives in America and is familiar with it…

He said that a tech. dude would come around July 18 at 10:30 am i suppose…
I think it may take an hour or so… depends on what we have… with our lines and all…

Now… the tv stuff i could care less… but I have a feeling he’ll need to play around in my room… cuz my computer is there… and it’s the one hooked with the router… Linksys router brand…

And my desk… is kinda crowded… and to get at the pc… he’ll have to crawl through a narrow area… and have to look through a narrow passage if he wants to access the back of my pc/tower… although… we can just unplug everything and do whatever… >_>

I just hope things go well and he doesn’t see the secret stash i have in my room >_>

or… maybe it’ll be a hawt girl tech. O_O !!!
gasp… *pssh… like that would happen wink.gif

Or grow tired of iamp/ mbr / efz and go on with a new game that i probably won’t know of…

i got a cute blonde to install my cable, she was rather intelligent as well. what i suggest is to make sure the area where the coaxial is cleaned up if you’re going to be embarrassed about it. i don’t think they need to plug anything onto your computer either if you have ethernet plugs already. they’ll probably just use your old cables and plug it into the router that they will give you. btw, i’m not sure but with cable modems, you’ll probably be renting it from the cable company. if you don’t feel like paying that extra cash for it, i would suggest going out and buying one of your own.

Never, ever go with BT. My parents switched to them without my request, and they suck.

As anyone on #DA will tell you, I lag out about every quarter to half an hour, get a quarter of the advertised speed on a good day, and they change the speed to suit them all of the time. I can’t finish a game on Xbox Live because of the lag outs, and the speed is bad too.

Basically, they suck. Never ever use them.

On a side note, from what I hear, there aren’t that many good providers, and none of the good ones provide to my area.

Fun for me.

BT ?

Bit torrent?
or is this something non-related to my issue?

hmm is interleaving on? with it turned on pings can generally be high which isnt great for gamers, altho with it turned on its kinda for error correction and you should loose less packets, you might wanna drop by ispreview.co.uk theres a whole load of information there that could be of use..

on a side note to all there is only really BT in the UK since they have cornered the market, BT own pretty much all the telecom service and dictate what we want (a recent story from the provider of our telecom system thinks their new 21CN network will be enough to cope and that fibre isnt necessary nor is it needed because the UK doesnt want speed but reliability… neither targets are been met regardless of what they say.. as for cable its only in select areas and there is no plans of installing it outside those places [basically means big cities and towns get it but nowhere else does)
