When these animes have settings or temporarily shift to foreign countries all the characters still speak in Japanese like its the universal language. Its just weird. I dont really watch American cartoons, is it the same here?
#1 - it’s being aired in japan, so that’s the easiest way for their audience to understand it… it is extremely rare to see anything subtitled on tv. (like even though you can get dvds in the us of anime that has a subtitled version, only the dub will air on tv)
#2 - they don’t do that 100% of the time. in Beck they really have people speaking english in parts w/ subtitles, it’s just not that often, which is probably why they could get away with doing it
Also translating the dialougue and sentence structure into different languages is more expensive than making everything Japanese.
They have to make sure it is correct…so other people don’t mock it.
(All your base…anyone? )
They also have to retranslate it into Japanese subs and get the Japanese actors to pronounce it correctly.
Anime is entertainment for the masses and airs on TV in the easiest understandable form.

i’d figure they’d just do subs.
watch last few eps of Black Lagoon Second Barrage, and you'll know why it's not the best practice to actually have characters shifting from one language to another.
If you watch older anime (like i do) you’ll see why they don’t change dialogue too much. older anime just…well, they we’re just terrible at it. it was so badly translated that i felt sorry for the japanese.
I can understand using Japanese because they are japanese shows. What would be interesting, though, is if they change the accent based on who is speaking. This is common in our cartoons as a way of showing they are different while still using English.
mad props O_O I had no idea any females on this planet knew it
all your base belong to us? i dont think ive ever been friends with someone who DOESNT know that line. way to notice reality, dude XD
and as for the question…because its convenient why did the little poor farmer mice in speedy gonzales all speak english instead of spanish, despite the fact that they were in mexico? and how did all those aliens that came to earth in the movies in the 1950s and on automatically speak perfect english? your audience cant be counted on to know every language in the world that your show might take place in.

Yet also as a way of showing how bias americans can be,if they do that then I rather them just speak their own language.
LOL XD
I know “all your base” from at least two flash music videos at newgrounds.
Can’t say it’s from playing the game though. :snicker:
More on topic…I’m just not bothered by them speaking Japanese no matter where they are.
It is more distracting for me if they throw in badly pronounced English.
I suppose other languages might get equally mispronounced…don’t know them well enough to tell. :heh:
Bottom line is…it’s just anime.
It is a story that is for entertainment. You shouldn’t have to think so much about it and wonder why they aren’t speaking French in France etc.

Sometimes it just gets odd. I tend to like the shows that take time with proper other languages. I suppose most of the time is is to make it convenient for the viewers. But when everybod in the world knows Japanese…(even the people trying to destroy Japan or aliens…)
Animes are mainly for a young audience (they may not even know their kanji lessons perfectly and you want them to understand other languages? XD). Plus it’s simpler and cheaper to just use their native language. Sometimes, seinen animes or other more more serious animes have other languages into them, but it’s rare.
